More than half of the state legislature stood up for agriculture, but some Democrats and Republicans stood a little taller, according to the awards announced this week by the Colorado Farm Bureau.
In the House, Democrat Ed Vigil of Fort Garland and Republican J. Paul Brown of Ignacio received the organization’s Pinnacle Award. In the Senate, the recognition went to Democrat Leroy Garcia of Pueblo and Republican majority leader Mark Scheffel of Parker.
“The Pinnacle Award is Colorado Farm Bureau’s most prestigious legislative award,” Colorado Farm Bureau President Don Shawcroft said in a statement about the honor given to one legislator from each party in each chamber at the end of each two-year legislative cycle.
Fifty-four of the General Assembly’s 100 lawmakers were named a Friend of Farm Bureau because they “have exceptional voting records, are willing to sponsor and support bills important to agriculture and stand out when it comes to advocating Farm Bureau priorities. The Friend of Farm Bureau award is recognized on an annual basis, at the end of each legislative session.”
The friends list is compiled each year.
“These recipients consistently supported issues vital to Colorado agriculture and sought ways to protect property rights, advocate for natural resources and safeguard our prior-appropriations water system,” Shawcroft stated.
